Structure deep-work blocks with beta-range beats and low background noise — part entrainment experiment, part ritual that actually works.

The setup

For work sessions, the common recipe is a beat in the 14–18 Hz range — squarely in beta — with a carrier tone around 200–250 Hz and a quiet layer of pink noise underneath. In the studio, the Focus preset (15 Hz) gets you there in one tap, or run the Focus Ramp journey: it starts at 10 Hz, climbs to 18 Hz over five minutes, and holds there for a full 25-minute block before easing off.

How to use it

  1. Put on headphones (binaural mode needs them — the beat literally doesn't exist without stereo separation)
  2. Start the audio before you open the work, not after — let it mark the boundary
  3. Keep the volume low enough that you forget it's there within a minute
  4. Work the block, stop the audio, take a real break

What to actually expect

Three things are happening at once, and only one of them is controversial:

  • Masking — steady audio covers unpredictable noise, which measurably helps concentration
  • Ritual — a consistent start-of-work cue trains your brain the way a gym playlist does
  • Entrainment — the possible nudging of brain rhythms toward the beat frequency, where the evidence is genuinely mixed

Binaural auditory beats affect vigilance performance and mood (Lane et al., 1998)

One of the earliest controlled studies, and still one of the most cited. Participants performed a monotonous 30-minute vigilance task while listening to beta-range (16 and 24 Hz) or theta/delta-range (1.5 and 4 Hz) binaural beats embedded in pink noise, without knowing which. The beta group detected more targets and reported less mood deterioration. Small sample and a single task, but a genuinely blinded design — rare in this literature.

Efficacy of binaural auditory beats in cognition, anxiety, and pain perception: a meta-analysis (García-Argibay et al., 2019)

The most useful single reference in the field: a meta-analysis pooling controlled binaural beat studies across cognition, anxiety, and pain outcomes. It found a modest overall effect, with longer exposure and beats presented without masking sound tending to work better. It's also candid about the field's problems — small samples and wildly inconsistent protocols. If you read one paper before forming an opinion, read this one.
