Listening note
Stereo headphones or earbuds are required to hear the binaural effect. Use a low, comfortable volume, and stop if the tones feel uncomfortable. Do not listen while driving or when you need to hear your surroundings.
Gamma generally refers to brain activity above roughly 30 Hz, although researchers do not use one universal upper boundary. In EEG research, gamma activity is discussed in relation to attention, perception, and information processing. Those associations do not mean that playing a gamma-rate binaural beat will reliably create the same brain activity or produce a specific mental result.
Gamma binaural sessions are often marketed for focus, attention, working memory, or "peak performance," especially at 40 Hz. These are popular listening uses rather than guaranteed effects. Research on 40 Hz exists, but studies differ in the sound used, carrier tones, masking, exposure time, control condition, population, and outcome measured.
It is also important to separate several forms of 40 Hz research:
- 40 Hz binaural beats: two audible carrier tones separated by 40 Hz, one delivered to each ear
- 40 Hz auditory stimulation: tones or noise pulsed or amplitude-modulated at 40 Hz
- 40 Hz sensory stimulation: light, sound, or combined stimulation repeated at 40 Hz
Results from one method should not automatically be used as evidence for another.

These are construction and listening notes, not claims that the setting will create a particular cognitive state.
Gamma is difficult to interpret in scalp EEG. Facial, jaw, eye, and neck muscles can produce high-frequency electrical activity that overlaps the gamma range. Researchers use artifact detection and removal methods to reduce that interference, but methods vary. A reported gamma change is more convincing when the study clearly explains how muscle artifacts were handled.
What remains uncertain
The evidence is not strong enough to say that a 40 Hz binaural beat consistently improves cognition or produces a defined gamma state in healthy listeners.
